Can I get addicted to my vibrator?

I’m a big fan of sex toys on this blog, in case you haven’t seen my archives wherein I devote four blog posts to exploring the Wide World of Sex Toys or the more recent posts where I’ve been reviewing sex toys like the Hitachi and the nJoy fun wand. But it’s natural to be concerned, I think, if there might be too much of a good thing. Can you get addicted to a vibrator?

Here is the short answer: it depends on your definition of “addicted.” A woman who only orgasms one way – whether through a vibrator, a shower head, or humping a pillow – will find it more difficult to orgasm using a different method. That’s not an addiction but a habituation. Because most orgasms have a significant mental component, changing the techniques of masturbation leads to immediate feelings of “this isn’t right, this isn’t what I’m used to,” which can delay orgasm. Fortunately, this isn’t an addiction. You aren’t permanently changing or numbing your nerve endings.

Because some vibrators give such an intense sensation, you might become numb to the device if you use it too often. Again, this isn’t an addiction, it’s your nerves needing a bit of a break. Take a bit of a break, masturbate in other ways, and then return to your vibrator less frequently.

Vanessa Marin examines this topic in a column on Bustle, and agrees that you can get acclimated to a vibrator, but taking a break restores clitoral sensitivity. So if you’re celebrating National Masturbation Month with daily play, put away the Hitachi now and then and use your fingers. All things in moderation.

Twitter Polls

I asked how many of you have ever masturbated for a partner, and 78% of respondents said yes, with another 16% saying no but you’d be into it. Of the 78% who said yes, 32% do it all the time, and 46% have done it a couple of times. Thanks for replying!
